Understanding Laser Hair Removal

Also called permanent hair reduction, laser hair removal is by far the safest, most effective, and most permanent solution for unwanted body and facial hair. It is the preferred treatment for removing hair from the face, arms, legs, underarms, and bikini line for women, and from the chest, shoulders, back, and legs for men.

How does laser treatment work to remove unwanted hair?

Your hair has a cycle of growth that is important to understanding how laser hair removal works. This cycle has three parts: the anagen, or active phase; the catagen, or resting phase, and the telogen, or no pigmentation phase. At any given time, about a third of your hair is in each of these phases.

Cosmetic laser equipment generates laser light at a specific wavelength that targets the hair bulb ‒ the growth center of the hair follicle. It is only able to kill hair in the active phase, when it is new and growing. This is why laser hair removal treatments are scheduled in a series over time.

How many treatments are there in a full program of laser hair removal?

The number of treatments you’ll need depends almost entirely on the size of the area you want treated. For small areas, like the spot above your upper lip, you may only need two or three treatments for thorough results. On the other hand, if you want to free yourself of hair from a large area, like your chest, back, or legs, you might be looking at a series of five or more visits. We recommend spacing your visits about 4 to 6 weeks apart.

The length of each individual session will also depend on the size of the treated area. Small areas will require very short sessions – perhaps only a few minutes, and probably no longer than 15 minutes for each visit. Bigger jobs will need more time per session, so expect a series of 30-minute treatments for larger areas.

While laser hair removal is extremely effective, it will not eradicate all hair growth permanently. Over time, you may see signs that hair is starting to return. For this reason, it’s a good idea to plan for a touch-up a few times a year to maintain the benefits of the original treatment.

What can you expect from a laser hair removal session?

Laser treatment is a relatively painless process. Most people report a sensation something like the sharp snap of a rubber band on their skin. Of course, everyone tolerates pain differently ‒ but laser treatment is far more comfortable than either waxing or electrolysis.

Immediately following a treatment, your skin may feel like it’s mildly sunburned, and appear red and slightly swollen or bumpy. This will fade within 2 to 24 hours. There is no recovery downtime for laser treatment ‒ you’ll be able to get back to your life right away. See our page on after care for detailed post-treatment instructions.

What should you know prior to scheduling a series of laser treatments?

Laser hair removal is effective for all skin types, from the darkest to the lightest. Unfortunately, though, it can only be used on dark hair ‒ the laser will not affect blonde, gray, or red hair.

To ensure maximum benefits from your laser treatment, stop using waxes, depilatory creams, tweezers, epilady, or electrolysis 4 to 6 weeks before you begin your sessions. It’s fine to shave or trim hair with scissors before and throughout your treatments ‒ and it’s necessary to shave 1 to 3 days immediately prior to laser treatment.

What are the advantages of laser hair removal?

Light-based permanent hair reduction frees you from endless attention to unwanted body hair. In a few brief sessions you can achieve long-lasting, smooth skin and dramatically reduced hair growth. Laser treatments allow you to permanently minimize hair growth over large areas.

Light-based technology focuses on hair follicles without harming surrounding tissues. Laser sessions are short, non-invasive, relatively pain-free, and completely safe, with no dangerous side effects and no downtime for healing or recovery.
